Movie Review - Balls of Fury

It's easy to make a stupid movie. But it's very difficult to make a stupid movie smartly. One that is so outrageous that it makes you laugh out loud, guffaw, and lose your breath.

"Balls of Fury" is one of those smartly made stupid movies. It joins a very short list of movies in this genre that are truly the cream of the crop. Movies such as "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun".

"Balls of Fury" is not about ping pong. Sure, that's the story line. But that's not what it's about. It is, in its simplest form, an hilarous spoof of movies such as "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon". It's just an over-the-top silly fest poking fun of martial arts action movies.

This movie uses some great one-liners, but makes even better use of sight gags. The costuming is fantastic. The writing is clever. The directing is nearly flawless. In one particular scene, the director uses one sight gag four times, and elicits even greater guffaws with each screen change. Just when you think it can't get any funnier, it does.

The movie is not perfect. The writers seemed to begin running out of steam after the first half. But still, the movie keeps your attention and does pay off.

It's well worth the price of rental. Gather your friends and family for a fun evening. Just don't serve drinks you don't want coming out of your nose.

An excerpt from my upcoming prayer email....

Pat was added to this prayer list a year ago, and was moved to the cancer corner when I started that special prayer category. She is not well, and I fear she is not long for this world. She has anal cancer, which is particularly nasty.

Pat continued to work when her chemotherapy started, but after several rounds of it, and after undergoing surgery, she was no longer able to work. After exhausting her medical leave, she lost her job, and along with it her health insurance. She has gone months without care or even pain medication.

Pat was recently taken to a nearby emergency room due to hemorrhaging. Once the hospital learned she had no coverage, they gave her a diaper and sent her home with a blood pressure reading of 60/50. Her children then took her to the county hospital where she began to receive proper care, such as CT scans and blood infusions.

This is not a political newsletter. It’s a prayer newsletter. And that’s what I ask for, your prayers. Not only for Pat, and the countless others in similar situations. But I also ask you to pray that we find a way to fix what is wrong with health care in this country. Because what is happening to Pat is just plain wrong. And there but for the grace of God go any of us.

Consider this: Eden has beaten her cancer. But the day she went back to work was the day after she had exhausted all of her medical leave. If she had not returned to work, she’d have lost her job and her coverage. And she was NOT done with treatment yet. Eden was able to tough it out at work, despite still being on chemotherapy. Pat couldn’t. My wife is alive and Pat is dying. Because of the loss of employer based health care coverage.

That’s just wrong.
