Pictures: Use Picasa for all your photo organizing and storage needs. It's free, and installs on your computer. But here's the bonus: you can set it to upload and store all your precious pictures online, also for free. Never worry about a crash destroying your pictures! http://picasa.google.com/
Documents: Most of the ordinary documents you create can easily be handled by Google Docs. Word-compatible text documents, spreadsheets, PowerPoint-compatible presentations. Keep them private, or share and collaborate. Create online, or upload to the site, and download them from the site if needed. Available from any computer with an internet connection. You don't have to take your docs with you, they're always there. http://docs.google.com
Portable Apps: Get a USB drive and load it up with portable apps. Firefox browser, Open Office Suite, PDF viewer, graphic editor, html editor, and just about any other home or office tool you can think of. Run them all off the USB drive and when you need to travel, leave your computer at home and just take the USB stick with you, and not only do you have your apps and docs, you've got your favorite browser and bookmarks, too! http://portableapps.com
Email: Gmail is hands down the easiest, most user friendly email service of all the online services. It's my default and ONLY email program, and retrieves and sends from every other email address I have. http://mail.google.com
Backup: If you use Picasa for pix, and Google for docs and email, there's not much left to worry about in the way of data loss. But for whatever else you want to backup securely, there is MozyHome. A 2GB data backup account is free, and it installs and works perfectly without a hitch. http://mozy.com
Passwords: LastPass is the last password you'll have to remember. This service keeps all your user names and passwords online, so no matter where you are, you have access to them. It fills in the fields for you, and of course, allows multiple usernames and passwords for the same site. (Do you have 2 or 3 Google accounts for example?) It generates secure passwords, so you can quit using the same password for all your sites, and remember only one. http://lastpass.com
File Synchronization: Keep all your important documents in sync between your home PC, laptop, and office PC. Just tell Syncplicity which folders to sync, and every time a file is added, edited, or deleted from any of your computers, the same change is propagated to all the others. A 2GB account is free, and it's really easy to setup. http://syncplicity.com
